Yes, you could replace the bulbs yourself but you require a special tool to access the light casing and then you would be responsible for ensuring they are up to a safe standard.
In typical Edinburgh tenement stairs some of the light bulbs will need replaced each year or so. The most cost-efficient way going forward would be to undertake an LED Conversion to the existing light units which will ultimately reduce your ongoing maintenance costs over the lifespan of the lights (as you are not having to organise a relamp every so often). LED bulbs will typically last for 20-50,000 hours (let’s call that around 15-years based on 8-hours per night).
Yes, definitely. The choices are to have a replacement with a conversion kit (we use the coughtrie sfb 16 as Coughtrie lights have traditionally been installed in Edinburgh stairs) or a complete new fitting. Somewhat surprisingly a complete new fitting is actually the lower cost option (but if it is different sized then rewiring might be required). Like all good questions the answer is ‘it depends!’
In most stair lighting in Edinburgh a Sangamo astro dusk till dawn time clock is used and many of these are coming to the end of their life span.
