Fuse Boards, also commonly known as Consumer Units or Fuse Boxes, are a critical piece of your electrical installation.

Do you need to replace your fuse board?

When it comes to the safety and efficiency of your electrical systems, the fuse board or consumer unit is a critical component. Over time, these essential units can become outdated or suffer wear and tear, leading to potential risks and inefficiencies. Ideal Electrical offers fuse board replacements in Edinburgh for homeowners, landlords, and commercial properties.

Reasons you may need to replace your fuse board or consumer unit include:

  1. Your current fuse board does not meet current safety regulations as it does not have an RCD (residual current device) – a safety device that switches off electricity automatically if electrical faults are detected.
  2. If you’re smelling ‘fishy smells’ from your fuse board.
  3. Flickering lights may indicate a melted cable in the fuse board.
  4. Your fuse board is very old – fuses age through use, so if it is older than 10 years it should be checked by a qualified electrician (as part of an EICR).

Can anyone replace a consumer unit?

Replacing a fuse board is not a DIY job. Only qualified electricians should replace a fuse board or consumer unit. This is a legal requirement due to the dangers involved in working with electrical supply.

Consumer unit upgrades

Upgrade to an RCBO consumer unit with SPD:

The 18th edition of the wiring regulations requires most circuits in a domestic property to be protected by an RCD.

Fuse boards are the heart of your electrical system, and upgrading to a modern RCBO board with SPD is no longer just an option; it’s a necessity. Here’s why Ideal Electrical recommends this essential upgrade:

Enhanced Safety:

RCBO Protection: RCBOs combine the functions of a Residual Current Device (RCD) with overcurrent protection. This means that they not only detect leakage currents that could cause electric shock but also protect against overloads and short circuits. This double layer of protection ensures maximum safety for the inhabitants of the property.

SPD Inclusion:

With the addition of Surge Protection Devices, electrical systems are safeguarded against sudden voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes or other power surges. Without SPD, these surges can damage or destroy electronic devices and appliances, leading to costly replacements.

Compliance with Electrical Regulations:

Modern building codes and regulations often require the inclusion of RCBO and SPD in electrical systems. By upgrading to an RCBO board with SPD, you ensure that your property follows the latest industry standards and local regulations.

Increased Energy Efficiency:

RCBO boards provide a more refined control over the electrical flow, reducing wastage and enhancing the overall efficiency of the system. This can translate to lower energy bills and a greener footprint for your property.

Futureproofing:

As technology evolves, so do the demands on your electrical system. By upgrading to an RCBO board with SPD, you are investing in a system that is adaptable and prepared for the future, capable of supporting modern appliances and technological advancements.

Peace of Mind:

Knowing that your electrical system is equipped with the best protection available offers peace of mind. With Ideal Electrical you get professional installation and ongoing support, ensuring that your system functions optimally.
